A Treasure on the Trace

#ATreasureontheTrace is the story of #FrenchCamp from its beginnings in the early 1800s to 1996. Louis Lefleur, the well-known trader with ties to the Choctaw Nation, established a station at what is now French Camp, MS on the Natchez Trace. A house of entertainment on the site became known as the Frenchman’s Camp. After the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek
in 1830, the Choctaws were removed to Oklahoma, and settlers came from South Carolina to find farm land. Groups of Presbyterian settlers arrived and, Christian activities were centered around the village of French Camp. After the Civil War, young Augustus Mecklin (a descendant of one of the early families) returned home and became pastor of the French Camp Presbyterian Church. He was instrumental in founding separate academies for boys and girls, which were combined in the early 1900s. The story continues through the 20th century and focuses on the development of the town, the school, and the Baptist and Presbyterian churches. This book will be of interest to Mississippi history buffs, for it contains facts, names, the town and school charters, pastors, veterans, and a complete listing of the French Camp Cemetery. This story tells of John Cobb, a book agent who buys a bookstore in Judithland, Mississippi, and his pursuit of an authoress he makes up his mind to marry. The Reef

Treat yourself to a vintage (1914) edition of #TheReef by #EdithWharton, the story of two Americans, George Darrow and Anna Leath, who had a previous relationship. George, an American diplomat in London, wants to continue it, and goes to France to join Anna, who is reluctant to renew their former situation. Complications ensue after George meets a young woman, Sophy, in Paris who turns out to be the governess Anna has engaged for her young daughter, plus the woman Anna’s nephew wants to marry. The Natchez District and The American Revolution

#TheNatchezDistrictandtheAmericanRevolution by #RobertVHaynes relates the background and events of a little-known piece of history, the #WillingExpedition. Many British loyalists in the Colonies had fled to the Natchez District (now known simply as Natchez), an isolated outpost on the banks of the Mississippi River. James Willling, a member of the Continental Congress, was sent there in 1778 to shore up what was seen as a weak spot controlled by the British. He and his party raided British forts, plantations, and other properties of British loyalists, and demanded an oath of loyalty from them. Afterwards, the area, along with the Lower Mississippi Valley, changed hands several times, but was controlled by the Spanish at the end of the war. Haynes’s book, though scholarly, also captures the drama of life in Mississippi during the American Revolution. The Belle Gone Bad

Did #ScarlettOHara start it all? Not really, although she is a great example of the dark seductress described in this book. The image of the southern belle—pure. fair, and on a pedestal— is only one idea of womanhood portrayed in literature, especially that of white, southern, female writers from the antebellum period to the present. These writers have also created treacherous belles, bad belles, and dark seductresses who combine the southern ideal of ladyhood with its shadow side. This alternate belle can be seen as a critique to a culture that effectively enslaved both its white and black women. Citing the works of #AugustaJaneEvans, #MargaretMitchell, #EllenGlasgow, #CarolineGordon, and #EudoraWelty among others, #BettinaEntzminger presents an in-depth examination of this fascinating subject. This work is available at Pentimento Books inside the Leake Street Collection, Olde Towne Clinton, MS. Published by the Louisiana State University Press; paperback $15.00

Young Romantics

#YoungRomantics by #DaisyHay presents, according to the subtitle, “The Tangled Lives of English Poetry’s Greatest Generation.” It focuses on the lively network of writers and readers who gathered around #PercyByssheShelley and the campaigning journalist #LeighHunt. In an era of great political and literary turmoil and change, several poets, critics, and essayists with oppositional stances formed a group which included #LordByron, #JohnKeats, and #MaryShelley and several lesser-known writers and painters. The group originated in 1813 while Hunt was in jail for criticizing the Prince Regent George and lasted until the death of Shelley in 1822. The radicalism espoused by the group included Byron’s and Shelley’s belief in free love, which had disastrous effects on some of the women involved. Highly praised by the New York Times, Hays’ book is available at Pentimento Books inside the Leake Street Collection, Olde Towne Clinton, MS. Hardback $27.50

Ascending Peculiarity

#AscendingPeculiarity consists of interviews with the artist #EdwardGorey selected and edited by #KarenWilkin. Although he may be unknown to many, Gorey is known to some through the opening titles of the PBS series #Mystery!, which are based on his art in an animated sequence. Notoriously protective of his privacy, Gorey refused most interviews, but much can be learned about him through this collection. He wrote over 100 books, most of which are rare and out of print, but four collections, the Amphigorey series, each containing 15 or more books, make his writings and accompanying drawings available. The interviewers include Dick Cavett, Jane Merrell, Scott Baldauf, and Steven Keller, among others. Gorey’s artworks appear throughout, and there is a section of quotes at the end. Available at Pentimento Books inside the Leake Street Collection, Olde Towne Clinton, MS. Hardback $17.95
